You may say we are individuals...but in the end it's obvious we're just a number to you

Police Officer Heels

Well hello officer, can I help you?

That's sort of how it went, well kinda.  While at home today, just finishing up a work phone call - there was a man (who quite comically wouldn't walk up to the door because my dogs were barking through the screen - he was smart to stay back) standing on my sidewalk.  I walked out onto my front porch, to have the man introduce himself as basically a truancy officer.

He asked if a certain young man lived at my house - to which I responded yes as he was referring to my son.  He then began asking me questions if we had withdrawn my son from school and I basically had to inform him of what occurred last fall.  In a nutshell, our school district had lost my son's file and the paperwork which showed he legally withdrew from school and even took his GED.  I couldn't remember off the top of my head where his withdrawal papers were, but I knew the letter from the state about him practically acing his GED was in my kitchen cabinet.  The man finished by asking if my son was employed and when I responded yes, he asked where.  I guess he needs to check up on him.

At first it was kind of comical.  But there was period of time this evening while I was cooking dinner that I realized our school district is so large - that our kids are basically just a number, unless of course they are teacher's pets or kiss their asses.  It was kind of depressing.  Here is this supposedly great school district, however they don't think outside of the box for their non-traditional learners, which is what my son was.  I don't regret the decision we made to let him withdrawal - at least not at this time in my life or his.  The graduating classes at our high school is almost 8x what mine was.  Really hoping my daughter's experience is better than my son's.
